The Service – Northumberland County Council in partnership with the County’s Woodland Creation Partnership Group and Local Nature Recovery Strategy Pilot Group have embarked upon the task of creating more woodlands and forests under the Great Northumberland Forest Programme.

The Great Northumberland Forest is a plan to increase tree and woodland cover across the County to help tackle the big challenges facing society such as climate change, biodiversity decline, promoting health and wellbeing, and supporting our thriving local economy.

Our determination to leave a better, more diverse, and more productive natural environment for the benefit of future generations of Northumbrians and visitors to the County can be realised by planting more trees and recovering nature. We will create and improve new and existing natural environments that our children, communities, and businesses will benefit from for decades to come.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced communications and engagement professional to join the Great Northumberland Forest Team.

As part of the team, you will have a key role in delivering communications and engagement activity for the Great Northumberland Forest programme. The programme will facilitate, enable, and support woodland creation schemes and projects of various types and sizes across the county. You will use your communications expertise to inform and engage with the public, stakeholders, partners, and the media about these opportunities and programme developments.

Whilst a background or knowledge of woodland planting schemes would be helpful – what’s more important is your engagement and communication skills.

With excellent written and verbal communications skills, you will plan, manage, and deliver much of our engagement, communications and media work. We’re looking for a creative thinker who can create engaging content using a range of different communications channels to ensure far outreach across the county, including the development of website material, implementation and management of social media channels, as well as proactive PR and engagement.

You will need a proven track record of delivering high quality communications and engagement across the full range of channels, be able to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and be excited about making a positive difference to people’s lives in the County through your work.

The successful candidate will have:

- Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal

- Practical experience in a communications and engagement role

- Experience of developing and implementing communications and stakeholder engagement plans

- Experience of communicating and working with a wide range of stakeholders such as landowners, farmers, businesses, public bodies, NGOs and communities.

- Strong organisational skills, being able to manage multiple priorities and varying pressures to meet measurable targets and deadlines

- A strong understanding of the importance of online presence and ways to promote visits to our website and social media channels

- Experience of developing online content for web and social media channels

- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including data protection, copyright and model release
