The Service

The Learning and Skills Service is funded predominantly through the Education and Skills Funding Agency and other Government departments and is responsible for the delivery of a range of post 16 education, careers, skills and employability training, support and coaching. The Service uses its funding to widen participation in learning, target areas of deprivation and reach under-represented groups in learning.

Reporting to the Safeguarding Learner Support and Prevent Lead, our Learner Support team provides additional support in the classroom for those learners who require extra help to build their confidence and help them remain on their course or programme. Demand for this support is increasing and the team is now recruiting for additional Teaching Support Assistants to join the team.

The role

You will be working in an educational setting with young people aged 16 and over who may have a range of special educational needs. You will be experienced in using your specialist skills and training to support students' learning in classroom and practical activities as well as providing supervision and positive engagement at break times. You will support learning activities with students within an agreed framework of supervision, adjusting the support and the activities to meet student’s individual needs.

Although this is a sessional post, a fractional fixed term post may be available for the right person.

We require sessional staff to work across Northumberland at any of our 9 learning centres. It is likely that you will be asked to support learners at more than one centre.

Essential requirements:
The successful candidate will be educated to GCSE Grade A to C in English and Maths or equivalent with a certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning at Level 2 or equivalent.
A knowledge of the teaching of English and Maths, personal social and communication skills and strategies to support learning would be beneficial.
Experience of working with vulnerable and/or challenging learners would be beneficial.
