About HM Treasury:

If you are interested in making a difference to people’s lives across the country, the Treasury may be the place for you! We are the United Kingdom’s economics and finance ministry. A Treasury career continues to offer an exciting opportunity to be part of decision-making that affects the whole of the UK.

We aim to raise the rate of sustainable growth, and achieve rising prosperity and a better quality of life with economic and employment opportunities for all.

Working at the heart of government, we collaborate with other departments to ensure public money is spent well and to drive strong and sustainable economic growth. Our work ranges from protecting customers through to the regulation of the financial sector, helping to reduce carbon emissions and creating a greener economy, supporting people across the country through the COVID 19 furlough scheme and Plan for Jobs as well as helping first time buyers buy their first home.

The Darlington Economic Campus is a pioneering new cross-government hub which will bring people together across departments and public organisations to play an active role in the most important issues of the day. A complete range of roles in every aspect of HM Treasury’s work will be available in Darlington, and at all levels of seniority right up to board level.

HM Treasury in Darlington will be joining the Department for International Trade, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Office for National Statistics, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and the Department for Education.

About the Groups:

The Enterprise and Growth Unit (EGU) within the Treasury works to promote sustainable economic growth and higher productivity in the UK. We provide analysis and advice to ministers on a range of major issues, including infrastructure, innovation, climate change, enterprise, regulation, and economic security. We focus on how best to support jobs and growth while ensuring public money is spent wisely.

We work very closely with other teams across the Treasury, and with other departments and government organisations, including: the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, the Department for Transport, the Department for International Trade, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, and the Competition and Markets Authority.

EGU welcomes and values people from all walks of life, and is a friendly, open, and supportive place to work. We have a varied and exciting agenda, and we need a diverse skill set to help us deliver it. There is no one type of person or particular background we are looking for. Our staff are drawn from a very wide range of backgrounds: local government, regulated utilities, the energy industry, airlines, professional services, and industry. We are committed to enabling a good work-life balance and flexible working.

If you would like to discuss working in EGU and the opportunities available, please contact John Staples (john.staples@hmtreasury.gov.uk).

About the Roles

EGU is split into three directorates:

• Infrastructure and Growth;
• Companies and Economic Security; and
• Climate, Energy and Environment.

We are recruiting several senior policy adviser roles across these teams. Successful candidates will be matched to roles that suit their skills, interests, and experience.

All successful candidates can expect to work on high-profile issues. Our team members work on some of the most interesting and challenging policy topics of the day. At present our work includes delivering the Spending Review, working with other departments to ensure the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) is a success, and developing policy to help the economy bounce back strongly from the pandemic. We are driving forward levelling up by improving road and rail links across the whole country and supporting UK universities and science to make the UK a genuine science superpower.

You will be part of a close-knit team. We provide team members with outstanding learning and development opportunities, both formal and informal. And we pride ourselves on creating a supportive and inclusive environment in which everyone can thrive and work collaboratively.

Our roles at Range E/Grade 7 require good judgement, the ability to get to grips quickly with new issues, and the ability to work well with others. These skills are much more important than any specific professional or academic background.
