Newcastle City Council is seeking to appoint a Prevent Co-ordinator on a fixed term contract until 31 March 2020. The post is currently subject to annual assessment for additional Home Office funding from April 2020.

The aim of Prevent is to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. We do this by challenging terrorist ideology; supporting vulnerable people and working with those sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation. This post sits within the Community Safety Team, supporting the safeguarding of individuals from the risk of radicalisation and improve the safety and cohesion of our communities.

The post will be responsible for leading the coordination, referrals, programme management and communications of all aspects of Prevent work in Newcastle. The post holders will be expected to represent the council at various internal and external meetings, working closely with the local community, senior council officers and elected members, as well as central Government.

As the Prevent Coordinator you will have substantial experience of working in a community safety or community cohesion role. You will ensure statutory duties are embedded into mainstream practice of the council and other specified authorities within a clear governance and assurance framework to effectively drive forward continuous improvement. You will have excellent communication and negotiation skills with a proven ability to work at senior levels within an organisation, faith groups, statutory and voluntary sector organisations as well as partnership working. You will also need to have experience of safeguarding work. Experience of managing staff is desirable. Substantial knowledge of relevant national strategies and legislation including the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 and Prevent Duty guidance is essential along with demonstrable experience of strategy, policy and delivery plan formulation and implementation.

Applicants should be politically astute and possess a strong understanding of the strategic landscape relating to radicalisation and counter-terrorism.

The successful candidate must be willing to obtain security clearance (SC enhanced level) and checks on online presence to prevent any reputational risks to the council. Please note that this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and is subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check.
