Further information

Gateshead Council has always been fiercely ambitious for the people of Gateshead, helping it to be a great place to live, work and visit. Led by our five pledges set out in ‘Making Gateshead a place where everyone thrives’, our aim is to ensure all local people can realise their full potential and enjoy the best quality of life.

By putting children and families at the heart of everything we do we can ensure all children within Gateshead can thrive and reach their full potential and live a safe and healthy life.

Gateshead is an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ local authority with a clear and focused ambition to be Outstanding.

Due to the early retirement of a post holder we are looking to appoint a key member of our senior management team.
•Practice Leader with lead portfolio areas for Assessment and Intervention (including Initial Response and Edge of Care) and Emergency Duty

The post holder will provide e
ffective strategic leadership, planning and robust performance management and oversight for these areas
whilst promoting a culture which values learning, reflection and acceptance of accountability to ensure the continuous development and improvement of the service.

The role will be challenging but very rewarding and you must have effective people management, performance management and quality assurance within a children’s services setting to ensure the focus is always on achieving better outcomes for children, young people and their families with the provision of the highest possible professional standards of social work.

As such you must hold a Social Work qualification to degree level or equivalent and be Social Work England registered. A project management qualification is desirable although not essential.

You must have an exceptional knowledge of Social Work methodologies, theory and best practice and a working knowledge of relevant legislation and case law. Knowledge of the national political and professional context, regulatory processes, inspections and expectations; risk assessment and risk management models are also essential.

You will have a sound knowledge of child protection system and thresholds, welfare systems and performance and improvement frameworks. You will be adept at financial management within large organisations, project implementation, multi agency / partnership working and have a clear commitment to equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice.

As this is a key managerial post you will have experience of successfully planning for and contributing to Ofsted inspection and have highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare complex reports.

This is a unique opportunity to join Gateshead Councils GOOD Children and Families Social Work Service, as rated by Ofsted June 2019.

In addition to a competitive salary (which includes a 25% recruitment and retention package) we also offer favourable terms and conditions which include membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, generous annual leave entitlement (plus the opportunity to purchase additional annual leave), and access to a wide range of employee benefits.

If successful, you will need to apply for an enhanced Disclosure.
