Further information

The Sunderland Safeguarding Adults Board (SSAB) was established in response to the requirements of the Care Act 2014 and brought together key organisations and partners to safeguard and promote the well-being and independence of adults living in Sunderland. The Sunderland Safeguarding Adults Board is seeking to recruit an Independent Chair to provide leadership and strategic vision, and to build on and enhance the current strong partnership arrangements to support the SSAB in fulfilling its functions and strategic priorities.

The role of Independent Chair requires an outstanding individual with enthusiasm, commitment and determination to drive forward the adult safeguarding agenda in Sunderland. The successful candidate will have experience of leading and managing in a large public, independent or voluntary sector organisation at a senior level, proven experience of chairing complex partnership meetings and have extensive knowledge and experience of applying the legislation and guidance in relation to safeguarding adults. They will ensure that the SSAB operates effectively to deliver its key objectives and functions as set out in the Care Act (2014).

Importantly, the successful candidate will have the confidence to provide independent, constructive challenge to SSAB partners and organisations in order to bring about improved outcomes for adults at risk of abuse or neglect. They will also actively promote engagement with adults who need care and support, their families and advocates, to ensure their voices are heard and acted upon within the Board’s work.

It is anticipated that this role will require the post holder to undertake on average 1 – 2 days per month, however, there would need to be a degree of flexibility. The specific commitment required can be agreed as part of the appointment process and is open to negotiation.

The appointment will be for 2 years, subject to review at 6 months and annual appraisals.

Please note that the Independent Chair will perform Office Holder duties and IR35 rules apply to this appointment. Payments will be made through payroll and tax and NI deductions will be made at source via PAYE in line with current HMRC guidelines.

For an informal discussion regarding the role, please contact Ann Dingwall, SSAB Business Unit Manager, on 0191 561 8979.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Application: Candidates are required to submit their CV to jobs@sunderland.gov.uk with a supporting statement setting out their suitability against the person specification, how they satisfy the requirements of the role and why they are interested in the role. For detailed information on this role, please refer to the Role Description and Person Specification.

If you have not received contact regarding your application within three weeks of the closing date, please assume you have been unsuccessful.
