Gateshead Council has a dedicated Private Sector Housing Team, made up of Environmental Health Officers and Technical Officers. The Team works across a broad range of housing related issues to improve private sector housing conditions, and to tackle housing related crime.

You will be working specifically on housing inspection and enforcement and investigation into and tackling housing related nuisances. The role includes proactive and responsive work and using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System to inform enforcement decisions, taking enforcement action, and supporting those affected by poor housing conditions in conjunction with other services and agencies.

You will require a Degree/Diploma in Environmental Health, have achieved or be working towards a Certificate of Registration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board and will have a minimum of one year experience working within a private sector housing team. You will have knowledge of current and emerging private sector housing related legislation, in particular that relating to the technical aspects of housing standards and nuisance related enforcement and experience of taking of the relevant forms of enforcement action. You will have experience of working with in-house colleagues and external agencies to solve housing related problems, and of proactive work with landlords and the public in relation to the private rented sector.

You will have well-developed planning, organisational, communication and customer service skills, and be computer literate. Analytical skills will be required to investigate and interpret varied and complex information, draw conclusions and make recommendations for action. Effective project management skills and the ability to improve systems of work are essential.

You will have a current driving licence or means to mobility support.
