This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to lead the development and delivery of a new History Centre for County Durham.

This new post is being created to lead programme management, including development of the service offer and design and planning of the build.

The aim of the project is to transform access to and preservation of County Durham’s written heritage. Five services will be brought together in the Grade 2 listed manor house at Mount Oswald, Durham, creating a flagship facility where people will be able to discover and explore the County’s nationally and internationally significant collections. These services include the County Archive, Local Studies, Historic Registration, Historic Environment Record and Durham Light Infantry Collections. These will be co-located with the wider Registration Service, with the original manor house providing a new location for wedding and civil ceremonies and statutory registration functions alongside a new build extension which will provide research facilities, exhibition space, collections care facilities and storage.

More than a building, Mount Oswald will be at the heart of a new audience-focused service reaching out across the County through activities, digital programmes and partnerships, reconnecting people with their heritage, taking an active part in discovering and making history.

With a background in programme management of heritage or cultural projects, and an understanding of how digital technology can widen access to heritage, you will take the project from planning approval through to completion and opening.

You will need to creatively manage the development of a new service model and business plan alongside the design and build of the scheme, and development of the initial activity programme. Key to this will be working collaboratively with the wider project, service and design teams to ensure that service needs inform the delivery of the capital works to time and budget alongside external funder requirements.

Given the value of heritage to County Durham, you will need to engage effectively with the public and local stakeholders to communicate and consult on project outcomes.

Applicants should be educated to degree level or equivalent together with having previous experience of working at a professional level in a heritage or cultural environment which directly serves the public e.g. archives, museums, libraries.
