Community Support Worker - helping communities bring about social change, grow community wealth and create resilient communities.

Sunderland has a thriving Voluntary and Community Enterprise Sector (VCSE) and, alongside partners, Sunderland Council is committed to working with the sector to improve opportunities and reduce inequality for residents and to support the VCSE to increase their capacity and sustainability.

We have established an Alliance whose first priority is to increase capacity within the sector to ensure our voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations across Sunderland are supported day-to-day, to ensure they can fundraise, manage volunteers, and to develop and increase their delivery offer, should they want to.

Sunderland Council has secured funding to create five fixed-term Community Support Worker posts, which will work within one of the five geographical areas of Sunderland – Coalfield, North, East, West and Washington.

The posts will be initially for two years, with potential to extend subject to funding.

As a Community Support Worker, you'll work with voluntary and community sector organisations, social enterprise organisations, resident groups and whole communities, empowering them to:
• identify their assets, needs and opportunities
• plan what they want to achieve and take appropriate action
• develop activities and services to generate aspiration and confidence and support delivery of the City Plan, Neighbourhood Investment Plans, Community Wealth Building Strategy and Community Led Local Development Strategy

This role will frequently involve addressing inequality and the projects will often be in communities perceived to be disadvantaged for a range of reasons.

The post holder will be part of a busy and vibrant team dealing with both internal and external customers. You will be required to have excellent interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal and have excellent literacy, numeracy and customer service skills and a general understanding of Voluntary and Community Sector Procedures.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
