The Service

The Northumberland Autism Support Service is currently made up of 6 qualified teachers who provide a range of advice, support and training for schools and settings throughout Northumberland. The day-to-day operational management and organisation of the team is the responsibility of the Autism Lead Practitioner who in turn reports to the High Incidence Needs Team (HINT) Manager. The service operates from a centralised base in Cramlington working peripatetically across Northumberland.

The role

Northumberland County Council’s Autism Support Service is looking to appoint two Autism Family Support Workers. These are newly created posts within the service which offer an exciting opportunity for highly motivated, enthusiastic, and creative individuals who are committed to providing a comprehensive family support service to families of children and young people known to the Autism Support Service, with and without a formal diagnosis of autism, on a need led basis.

The salary for this full-time position is £24892 - 27741

The Autism Family Support Workers will work under the direction of the Specialist Teachers for Autism with aspects of their supervision being provided by the Early Help SEND Lead. The role will involve a range of key duties such as:

· Working in a ‘whole family’ approach which may include undertaking Early Help Assessments with families to agree a clear plan with written actions, outcomes and responsibilities linked to all family members and acting as the lead professional, chairing Team Around the Family meetings.

· Undertaking planned and reactive work using a range of intervention methods and skills requiring the ability to manage time effectively.

· Using an assertive outreach approach-offer support and modelling alongside supervision and enforcement and persistent engagement.

· Taking on the role of supporting families to navigate systems when necessary, signposting, liaising and coordinating with a range of other agencies.

· Ensuring the involvement of children, young people and their families in decisions which affect them.

· Working with families to support successful access to school

· Using a range of different parenting support methods and facilitating specialist autism group work programmes for parents to attend, including those related to developing independence skills in preparation for adulthood

· Working with siblings when necessary to support understanding of the nature of social communication difficulties, and autism

· Building up close working links with other staff working with families within the Early Help Locality teams and other agencies and organisations including community organisations.
