Further information

“This is Redcar and Cleveland. We are an ambitious council keen to build on our strong track record of innovation and partnership working, ensuring that we create a flourishing future for the borough and all of its residents. Key to this is a committed workforce who always gives their best. Offering a fast paced, progressive working environment, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is a great career move.”

This post is based at the centre of the Council in the Resources Directorate which has key responsibility for managing the Council’s money and people as well as ensuring that democratic decisions are well informed and legally sound. The Welfare Rights Service provides free, independent, and confidential advice and information about all social security benefits. Its aim is to support the residents of Redcar & Cleveland through the provision of advice, casework, representation, campaigning, information and training.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of the Council’s specialist Welfare Right’s Service. Applications are invited from individuals with experience in the welfare advice sector. A key feature of the role will be to contribute to benefit campaign work and training for staff and partners in addition to welfare advice casework. This post will initially be an 18-month fixed term post subject to further funding.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate excellent knowledge of social security legislation and recent experience of providing benefit advice and information as well as experience of representing and advocating on behalf of others. Experience of delivering training and presentations to staff and members of the general public would be desirable. Candidates will be required to have excellent communication, networking and organisational skills. They will work collectively as part of a team but also manage their own individual caseload. The successful applicant will be required to work from home as well as from an office environment as needed. The role will also involve travelling to service locations, resident’s domestic dwellings and attending appeal or training venues. An ability to travel and access to a mode of transport is essential.

Interviews will be expected to take place on the 1st and 2nd July 2021. The interview process will involve candidates talking through their own approach to a benefit take-up campaign.

The council holds ambassador status for the North East Better Health at Work Award.

We offer attractive terms and conditions of employment, including generous annual leave entitlement, flexible working hours, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and access to numerous other salary sacrifice schemes and staff benefits/discounts, including a lease car scheme.

For an informal discussion please telephone Nichola Wilson-Barrett, Senior Welfare Rights Officer, on 01287 612587 or email nichola.wilson-barrett@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk.

The authority is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children/young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and an enhanced disclosure & barring service check (DBS) will be sought.
